STATEMENT BY PHILIP T. REEKER
DEPUTY SPOKESMAN

Following the November 6 visit of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic to Washington, we reiterate our strong commitment to the successful completion of the political and economic transition underway - - not just in Serbia, in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, but throughout the Balkans. Now, more than ever, the nations of Southeast Europe need to move toward a stable, self-sustaining future as modem democracies that are part of an integrated Europe that is whole, free, and at peace. It is in the international community's interest as we confront the threat of global terrorism that the countries in Southeast Europe develop inclusive democratic institutions and are stable, prosperous, committed to the rule of law, and in control of their borders. To this end, the United States, together with its European partners, will continue its strong engagement in the Balkans. We remain committed to helping the countries of the region to help themselves and each other to develop democratic institutions, free-market economies, and strong civil societies to hasten their full integration into Euro-Atlantic structures.

Povodom posete premijera Srbije Zorana Đinđića Vašingtonu, koja je započela 6. novembra ove godine, želimo još jednom da podvučemo da Sjedinjene Američke Države odlučno podržavaju uspešno okončanje političke i ekonomske tranzicije, koja je u toku ne samo u Srbiji i Saveznoj Republici Jugoslaviji, već i na celom Balkanu. Više nego ikada sada je potrebno da narodi jugoistočne Evrope krenu ka stabilnoj i samostalnoj budućnosti kao moderne demokratije koje su deo integrisane, nepodeljene, slobodne i mirne Evrope. U momentu kada smo suočeni sa pretnjom globalnog terorizma u interesu je međunarodne zajednice da zemlje jugoistočne Evrope uspostave sveobuhvatne demokratske institucije, i da budu stabilne, ekonomski uspešne, pravne države, koje imaju kontrolu nad svojim granicama. U tom cilju će Sjedinjene Države, zajedno sa svojim evropskim partnerima, biti i dalje intenzivno angažovane na Balkanu. Mi ostajemo rešeni da pomognemo zemljama ovog regiona da samostalno i pomažući jedna drugoj, u svojim državama razviju demokratske institucije, slobodne tržišne ekonomije i jaka građanska društva i na taj način ubrzaju svoju punu integraciju u Evroatlantske strukture.
