November 8, 2001 NEWS RELEASE U.S. Department of State, Office of the Spokesman STATEMENT BY RICHARD BOUCHER, SPOKESMAN The United States commends the authorities in Belgrade for taking into custody Nenad and Predrag Banovic, two Bosnian Serbs indicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, and for immediately transferring them to The Hague. These two individuals are charged with crimes against humanity, violations of the laws and customs of war and grave breaches of the 1949 Geneva Conventions. This is another indication of Belgrade's commitment to cooperate with the UN war crimes tribunal. The apprehension and transfer of all indictees remains a principal U.S. policy objective in the region. The United States calls on all remaining fugitives, in particular Radovan
Karadzic and Ratko Mladic, to surrender themselves with dignity to the
Tribunal. We also call on all authorities in the region to follow this
example and fully cooperate with the Tribunal in order to promote a
stable and lasting peace.
