United States of America Announces Junior The Junior Faculty Development Program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the Department of State. The Bureau fosters mutual understanding between the United States and other countries through educational exchange and training programs. These programs also support the economic and democratic development of the emerging democracies of Southeast Europe. The Junior Faculty Development Program provides scholarships to citizens of Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia and Serbia and Montenegro for a total of 11 months in the United States. The program is administered by the non-profit, non-governmental organization, American Councils for International Education (ACTR/ACCELS). Competition for this program is merit-based, and selection will be made on the basis of academic excellence, leadership potential, knowledge of English and the designated fields of study, and preparedness for study in the United States. Scholars who take part in the program must return home for two years after completion of their programs and are not eligible for visa transfers or extensions. In the current academic year, 2003-2004, 17 junior faculty members from universities throughout Serbia and Montenegro are presently studying in the United States at various universities, including the University of California at Berkeley, University of North Carolina, George Washington University and the University of Pittsburgh.
