U.S. Embassy Welcomes Joint Statement on Southern Serbia

The U.S. Embassy welcomes the joint statement signed yesterday by Nebojsa Covic, President of the Coordinating Body, the mayors of the municipalities of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja, and local leaders from Southern Serbia in which they reiterate their commitment to work together "to make rapid and substantial progress on issues of importance to these three municipalities."

In particular, we congratulate the Coordinating Body, as well as the representatives of the Party of Democratic Action, the Movement for Democratic Progress, and the Democratic Union of the Valley, who signed this agreement.

The agreement calls on the three municipalities to appoint representatives to eight Coordination Groups of the Coordinating Body. According to the agreement, these Groups will initiate work by March 20 to address a broad range of issues -- including education, economic development and security -- for the benefit of the people of Southern Serbia.

The United States Embassy, which has already provided over $3 million in assistance from the American people to these three municipalities, will continue to seek ways to support efforts to build greater stability, inter-ethnic cooperation, and prosperity in Southern Serbia.

Ambasada SAD pozdravlja zajedničku izjavu o južnoj Srbiji

Ambasada SAD pozdravlja zajedničku izjavu koju su danas potpisali Nebojša Čović, predsednik Koordinacionog tela za jug Srbije, predsednici opština Preševo, Bujanovac i Medveđa i lokalni lideri sa juga Srbije, u kojem se obavezuju da će raditi zajedno "kako bi omogućili brz i suštinski napredak u pitanjima koja su važna za ove tri opštine".

Posebno čestitamo Koordinacionom telu, kao i predstavnicima Stranke demokratske akcije, Pokreta za demokratski napredak i Demokratske unije doline koji su potpisali ovaj sporazum.

Sporazum poziva tri opštine da imenuju svoje predstavnike u osam koordinacionih grupa Koordinacionog tela. Prema sporazumu ove grupe će započeti do 20. marta sa radom na širokom spektru pitanja uključujući obrazovanje, ekonomski razvoj i bezbednost na dobrobit svih stanovnika južne Srbije.

Ambasada Sjedinjenih Država, koja je do sada obezbedila preko 3 miliona dolara pomoći američkog naroda za ove tri opštine, nastaviće da podržava napore da se izgradi veća stabilnost, međuetnička saradnja i napredak u južnoj Srbiji.
