Entrepreneurship: Business Development and Collaboration for Economic Growth and Improvement of Livestock Product Quality and Safety

The multiple veterinary worlds of research, governmental services, and product development and distribution will come together in a two day conference on February 1 and 2, 2006 in the Hotel Crna Gora in Podgorica. The conference starts at 9am. The objective of this program is to discuss concepts of entrepreneurship and technology transfer and to explore the opportunities of working collaboratively to address shared needs.

The conference will introduce the concept and benefits of technology transfer; present models for collaborations between government, academia, and industry; discuss strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of potential initiatives; and discuss mechanisms of effectively growing existing entrepreneurial enterprises. In addition, focus groups will identify potential areas for which collaborations can be established in Montenegro, and explore workable models of collaboration to address those areas.

The expected outcomes of the conference are to develop:
- Greater understanding of business methods useful in entrepreneurial initiatives
- Enhanced perspectives of market differentiation
- A specific industry problem list that could be addressed by researchers
- Dialogue among researchers, industry groups, and governmental veterinarians
- Outlines of models for potential collaborations among industry and university groups
- Proposal outlines for potential collaborations
- A collective Research Agenda to be used to gain support

The program will be lead by Dr. Eldon K. Uhlenhopp, Associate Dean and Coordinator for Livestock Security and Bioterrorism Defense at Iowa State University. Dr. Uhlenhopp has over 30 years of experience in animal health care delivery, animal health public policy, and veterinary education. Presenting a major portion of the program will be Mr. Scott Erickson, an experienced professional in global food and agribusiness management. His career has included executive roles with some of the world’s leading science-based organizations (including DuPont and Pioneer Hi-Bred International). The third presenter is Dr. Gregory Phillips. Dr. Phillips is an associate professor of Veterinary Microbiology and Preventive Medicine at the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Phillips teaches and conducts research in the field of bacterial genetics and molecular biology and has extensive experience in working with biological companies in bringing discoveries from the laboratory to the marketplace and will present significant findings from those experiences.

PREDUZETNIŠTVO: RAZVOJ POSLOVANJA I SARADNJE U CILJU EKONOMSKOG RAZVOJA I POBOLJŠANJA KVALITETA I BEZBEDNOSTI PROIZVODA

Program će voditi Dr. Eldon Julenhop (Dr. Eldon K. Uhlenhopp), koordinator za bezbednost stočarstva i odbranu od bioterorizma na Ajova Državnom Univerzitetu (Livestock Security and Bioterrorism Defense at the Iowa State University Outreach Academy, Ames, Iowa, USA) i viši poljoprivredni savetnik Ministarstva poljoprivrede SAD.
