U.S. Embassy Sponsors Food Safety "Serve Safe" Training for the Food Service Industry in Serbia and Montenegro

The U.S. Embassy and the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Serbia and Montenegro will sponsor a training program on food safety in Podgorica and Belgrade. Ms. Kateri T. Yunker, a certified “Serve-Safe”© trainer in the United States, will provide training to more than 80 participants at the Hotel “Crna Gora” in Podgorica on February 23-24, and Hotel Metropol in Belgrade on February 27-28. Participating in the workshop will be representatives from public institutions such as hospitals, schools, as well as military food service personnel and regulatory officials. Also invited are hotel and restaurant chefs and representatives of the organizations and associations supporting them.

This training, which is the latest of several food safety programs provided by the U.S. Government, is designed to improve the awareness of food borne illness and prevention, and to develop a cadre of people who can continue the training in Serbia and Montenegro. Proper food care and handling can prevent the millions of incidents of food borne illness and even death across the world each year. Prevention is vital, not only to the residents of Serbia and Montenegro, but also to the many tourists that visit the region, especially during the heat of summer when travelers flock to the Adriatic Sea and visit the historic towns and walled cities of the region.

The “Serve-Safe”© program is accepted across the United States as a qualifying program for food service personnel under the “Food Code” of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and as adopted by the States and local jurisdictions. Previously, the U.S. Government has supported training for meat processors and dairy industries in Serbia and Montenegro.
