International Right to Know Day Award Ceremony

Serbia’s first award for the state institution doing the most effective implementation of the Law on Access to Information of Public Importance will be given at a ceremony at the Belgrade Sava Center, marking International Right to Know Day, Thursday, September 28. The award is sponsored by the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance of the Republic of Serbia. The ceremony has been arranged with the assistance of the American Bar Association/Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative (ABA/CEELI), the Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia, the Coalition of NGOs for Freedom of Access to Information, the OSCE Mission to Serbia, and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

The ceremony will start with remarks by the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia Ivana Dulic-Markovic, the U.S. Ambassador Michael C. Polt and the Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia Ambassador Hans Ola Urstad. The keynote speeches will be given by Mr. Rodoljub Šabić, Public Information Commissioner of the Republic of Serbia and Ms. Nadežda Gaće, President of the Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia.

International Right to Know Day, a celebration that takes place throughout the world, aims to promote the fundamental right of the public to have access to information held by their governments. Its commemoration seeks to highlight the need for accountability of governments to their citizens.

Ceremonija dodele nagrada povodom Međunarodnog dana prava javnosti da zna

U Srbiji će po prvi put 28. septembra 2006. godine biti dodeljena nagrada državnoj instituciji koja je ostvarila značajan doprinos u primeni Zakona o slobodnom pristupu informacijama od javnog značaja. Nagrada će biti dodeljena na ceremoniji povodom Međunarodnog dana prava javnosti da zna, u Sava Centru u Beogradu. Nagradu dodeljuje poverenik za informacije od javnog značaja Republike Srbije. Ceremoniju dodele nagrade organizuju Američko udruženje pravnika/Pravna inicijativa za srednju Evropu i Evroaziju (ABA/CEELI), Nezavisno udruženje novinara Srbije (NUNS), Koalicija NVO za slobodu pristupa informacijama, Misija OEBS-a u Srbiji i Američka agencija za međunarodni razvoj (USAID).

Ceremoniju će otvoriti potpredsednica Vlade Republike Srbije Ivana Dulić-Marković, ambasador SAD Majkl K. Polt i šef misije OEBS-a u Srbiji ambasador Hans Ola Urstad. Skupu će se obratiti i poverenik za informacije od javnog značaja Republike Srbije Rodoljub Šabić i predsednica Nezavisnog udruženja novinara Srbije Nadežda Gaće.

Međunarodni dan prava javnosti da zna proslavlja se širom sveta sa ciljem promovisanja osnovnog prava javnosti na pristup informacijama koje se nalaze u posedu organa javne vlasti. Njegovim obeležavanjem se, istovremeno, ističe potreba za uspostavljanjem principa odgovornosti institucija javne vlasti prema građanima koji ih biraju.
