Successful U.S. Study Tour for Serbian Agricultural Market Reporters

As part of its ongoing project to build an agricultural market information system in Serbia, the Office of Agricultural Affairs at the U.S. Embassy organized a ten-day study tour in the United States for a group of nine Serbian market reporters and three staff from the Ministry of Agriculture. The purpose of the tour was to give the participants a first hand view of the U.S. marketing system for agricultural products and the methods that U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) uses to collect and disseminate market information.

After one day meeting with USDA agencies in Washington, the group traveled to Florida. They visited the terminal market in Tampa, the Florida State Market, and selected fruit and vegetable packing houses. The Serbian visitors observed the importance of packaging and branding in the pricing and marketing of products. The group also visited two fruit and vegetable hydroponic production facilities. This new technology offers intriguing possibilities for Serbia – a large amount of produce that can be grown on very small plots of land.

The group then traveled to St. Joseph, Missouri to learn about the cattle business. The staff of St. Joseph office of USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) demonstrated to the participants the system of mandatory and voluntary livestock price reporting. The group also visited the local cattle auction. The Serbian group visit generated positive press coverage by the St. Joseph News-Press

Finally, the participants visited the Minneapolis Grain Exchange and learned about spot and futures markets and how U.S. wheat is graded according to its quality characteristics. The introduction of such market methods in Serbia would enable producers of high quality baking wheat to obtain better prices and Serbian wheat grower would be able to better compete in international markets.

The group returned to Serbia with a much greater understanding of the importance of good marketing information system in agriculture, but also the importance of grades and standards and packaging.
