U.S. Welcomes Indictments in Bytyqi Case

The U.S. Government welcomes the indictment by the War Crimes Prosecutor's Office against Sreten Popovic and Milos Stojanovic, former members of a special police unit who are suspected of involvement in the murder of Yili, Mehmet and Agron Bytyqi.

The Bytyqi brothers were American citizens who were illegally detained and subsequently executed in Petrovo Selo, Serbia in 1999.

These indictments are a significant step toward resolving the Bytyqi case, and an important sign that Serbian authorities are working to ensure that all those responsible in this case face justice.

We applaud the War Crimes Prosecutor's Office for taking this important step, and appreciate the hard work of judicial and law enforcement officials that led to these indictments. We expect that they will continue their work to complete the investigations in this case, and to arrest, indict and prosecute all those involved, regardless of the perpetrators' current or previous rank or position.

All those responsible for the murder of the Bytyqi brothers must be held accountable. Only then can justice truly be served and the family of the Bytyqi brothers truly find closure.

Sjedinjene Države pozdravljaju podizanje optužnica u slučaju braće Bitići

Vlada SAD pozdravlja podizanje optužnice Tužilaštva za ratne zločine protiv Sretena Popovića i Miloša Stojanovića, bivših pripadnika Posebnih jedinica policije, koji su osumnjičeni za ubistvo Ilija, Mehmeta i Agrona Bitićija.

Braća Bitići su bili američki građani koji su nelegalno pritvoreni i pogubljeni u Petrovom Selu, Srbija, 1999. godine.

Ove optužnice predstavljaju značajan korak ka rasvetljavanju slučaja Bitići i signal da srpske vlasti rade na privođenju pravdi odgovornih lica.

Mi pozdravljamo ovaj važan korak Tužilaštva za ratne zločine i cenimo rad sudskih i policijskih službenika koji je doveo do optužnica. Mi očekujemo nastavak istraga u ovom slučaju i hapšenje i procesuiranje svih lica umešanih u zločin, bez obzira na njihov prethodni ili sadašnji čin ili položaj.

Sva lica umešana u ubistvo braće Bitići treba da odgovaraju. Samo u tom slučaju pravda može biti zadovoljena a porodici braće Bitići pružena mogućnost da pronađe trajni mir.
