Ambassador Munter Opens the International Summer School for Democracy
On August 28, U.S. Ambassador to Serbia Cameron Munter participated in the opening of the 10th annual International Summer School for Democracy, the topic of which was "Transition, Islam and Democracy." In his remarks, Ambassador Munter stated that, "The voices of Islam join all others to strengthen the United States' civic values of equality, tolerance, and pluralism." He emphasized the U.S. commitment to ethnic and religious diversity, both at home and abroad, and noted that the U.S. Embassy is proud of its support to the rebuilding of the Islamic Community Center in Belgrade and the rebuilding of a historic Mehteb in Novi Pazar. The Ambassador praised the organizers of the International Summer School for Democracy for selecting one of the most challenging topics of our time for their program.
The U.S. Embassy in Serbia traditionally supports the International Summer School for Democracy, organized by Anglo-Serbian Society, through small grants and the sponsoring of guest lecturers. This year, the U.S. Embassy was proud to to invite Dr. Aly Abuzaakuk from the Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy, in Washington D.C., to speak on the American Muslim experience.
Other invited guests participating in the ceremony included Rasim Ljajić, Minister of Labor and Social Policy and president of Sandžak Democratic Party; Stephen Wordsworth, Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Serbia; Dr. Vukašin Pavlović, Director of the International Summer School for Democracy and Dr. Slobodan Marković, Executive Director of the Summer School.

Ambasador Manter na otvaranju Letnje škole demokratije
U utorak, 28. avgusta, ambasador Manter prisustvovao je otvaranju desete godišnje Letnje škole demokratije na temu "Tranzicija, Islam i demokratija". U svom obraćanju, Ambasador Manter je izjavio: "Glasovi Islama pridružuju se svima ostalima u nastojanju da se ojačaju američke građanske vrednosti poput jednakosti, tolerancije i pluralizma". Ambasador Manter je naglasio posvećenost Sjedinjenih Država etničkoj i religijskoj različitosti, unutar i van SAD, i još jednom potvrdio da je ambasada SAD ponosna jer je učestvovala u obnovi Centra islamske zajednice u Beogradu, kao i u rekonstrukciji istorijskog Mehteba u Novom Pazaru. Ambasador Manter pohvalio je organizatore letnje škole zbog izbora jedne od najizazovnijih tema sadašnjice za svoj ovogodišnji program.
Ambasada SAD u Srbiji već tradicionalno podržava Letnju školu demokratije koju svake godine organizuje Anglo-Srpsko društvo, u vidu malih grantova ili dovodeći gostujuće predavače. Ove godine Program gostujućih predavača iz SAD je imao čast da pozove Dr. Alija Abuzakuka iz vašingtonskog Centra za proučavanje Islama i demokratije, koji će održati nekoliko predavanja na temu položaja Muslimana u Americi.
Ostali počasni gosti na otvaranju bili su Rasim Ljajić, ministar rada i socijalne politike i predsednik Sandžačke demokratske partije; Stiven Vordsvort, ambasador Velike Britanije; Dr. Vukašin Pavlović, direktor Letnje škole demokratije, i Dr. Slobodan Marković, izvršni direktor Letnje škole demokratije.
