U.S. Ambassador Helps Restore Viminacium

On September 13, 2007, U.S. Ambassador to Serbia Cameron Munter will sign a grant of $31,200 to help preserve the Roman amphitheater at the Viminacium Archaeological Site. Dr. Miomir Korac, Assistant Minister of Culture of the Republic of Serbia and Viminacium Project Director will accept the grant. The signing will take place at the site.

Viminacium Archaeological Site, managed by the Archaeological Institute, Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, is located at the confluence of the Mlava and the Danube rivers near the town of Kostolac in the municipality of Pozarevac, Eastern Serbia. The archaeological complex includes a legionary base, civilian settlement and river port.

Funds for the project will be used to define the physical extent of the site where the amphitheater is located and evaluation of the state of preservation of the structure in order to place it under the protection of law as a cultural monument. The project will also plan for the conservation and presentation of the archaelogical means and artifacts associated with the structure.

The American Embassy in Belgrade views this project as a sign of the American people's respect for Serbian cultural heritage and of the strong ties between the Serbian and American peoples.

The funding for this project is provided by the Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation established by Congress in 2001. The Fund helps countries around the globe preserve historic sites and manuscripts, museum collections, and traditional forms of music, dance, and language.

The Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation has to date helped fund three projects in Serbia: restoration of the elementary school or mekhteb adjoining the “Altun Alem” Mosque in Novi Pazar ($50,000 in 2006), renovation of facade of the Memorial School in Orasac ($24,450 in 2005) and reconstruction of the Rakovica Monastery's roof ($17,000 in 2001.)

Arheološki kompleks uključuje vojni logor, grad i luku.
