Presentation of Kosovo Status Proposal to the Parties, Statement by Sean McCormack
The United States thanks UN Special Envoy Martti Ahtisaari for his efforts to produce a Comprehensive Proposal for a Kosovo Status Settlement. This Settlement Proposal, the product of over a year of negotiations, is fair and balanced. It is a blueprint for a stable, prosperous and multi-ethnic Kosovo. The Settlement Proposal's broad provisions to protect the rights of all citizens will help advance Kosovo's democratic development.
With the presentation of this Settlement Proposal to the parties on February 2, the Kosovo status process is now entering its concluding phase. We call on leaders in Belgrade and Pristina to engage constructively with Special Envoy Ahtisaari in a period of consultations to finalize the Settlement. We encourage Special Envoy Ahtisaari to complete his work soon so that Kosovo and the region can finally have clarity about the future. Our goal remains an outcome that advances regional stability, promotes multi-ethnicity and is acceptable to the people of Kosovo.
