Statement on Recent Events in Serbian Parliament

We understand the deep concern of the people of Serbia over the events in the Parliament of May 7 and 8.

We are very disappointed that language from the Milosevic era has made its way back into Serbian politics.

The language of hatred is dangerous. It can only serve to further divide Serbian society, and to create the very climate that Serbians have struggled so hard to overcome – a climate in which hatred is tolerated, where attacks against those who exercise their democratic right of free speech can go unpunished, and in which those that promote a democratic, peaceful and, above all, European path for Serbia will fall prey to darker forces that wish to drag Serbia back into an autocratic past.

We hope that all those concerned with Serbia's better future will stand by their democratic ideals, and will make their voices heard to choose a Serbia that will take its rightful place in a Europe whole free and at peace.

We remain ready and committed to support fully those in Serbia who still see hope for a democractic, reform-minded new government today and who want a better, more stable, and a more successful country tomorrow.
