Important Information: New Nonimmigrant Visa Fee as of January 1, 2008

Effective January 1, 2008, the application fee for a U.S. nonimmigrant visa will increase from $100 to $131.   This increase in the application fee applies to nonimmigrant visa applications worldwide.

Those applicants who paid the prior $100 application fee before January 1, 2008 will be processed without further payment only if they appear for a visa interview before January 31, 2008.

Applicants who paid the prior $100 application fee but have an interview scheduled after January 31, 2008 must pay the difference -- $31 --  at any branch of Raiffeisen Bank in Serbia or NLB Montenegro Banka in Montenegro before they will be interviewed.

Any initial visa application payments made after January 1, 2008, regardless of the interview date, must be for the full $131 fee.

The  U.S. Department  of State is required by law to recover the cost of processing nonimmigrant visas through the collection of the Machine-Readable Visa application fee. Because of new security-related costs, new information technology systems, and inflation, the $100 Machine-Readable Visa fee is lower than the actual cost of processing nonimmigrant visas.

Applicants must pay the $131 nonimmigrant visa application fee in Serbian Dinars (not in USD). The amount should be paid in advance and only at any Raiffeisen Bank branch in Serbia. The applicant's name and passport number are required when paying the fee. The original Raiffeisen Bank receipts have to be attached to the visa application. The receipts will be valid for one year and can be used at any time but are not transferable, and the fee cannot be refunded.

Applicants from Montenegro may pay the non-immigrant visa application fee in Euros at Montenegro Bank. The applicant's name and passport number are required when paying the fee. The original Montenegro Bank receipts have to be attached to the visa application. The receipts will be valid for one year and can be used at any time but are not transferable, and the fee cannot be refunded.

The banks do NOT set the exchange rates. The exchange rate for dinars is set periodically by the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade for dinars, or in the case of euros in Montenegro, by a central U.S. Embassy for all countries using the euro. The rate is usually set once per month and is based on an average of the highest official exchange rates for the previous month. It can be difficult to forecast exhange rate changes through an entire month. The rate must be set with sufficient room for exchange rate swings during the month so that the foreign exchange equivalent paid by each visa applicant never falls under the dollar-denominated required fee for the U.S. visa application. Consequently, the exchange rate may tend to be slightly less favorable than exchange rates used elsewhere.
