Dual Nationality and Military Service

Dual Nationality and Military Service

Dual US/Serbian or US/Montenegrin nationals need to be aware that they may be subject to laws that impose special obligations on Serbian and Montenegrin citizens. Serbian as well as Montenegrin males between the ages of 18 and 27 are required by Serbian as well as Montenegrin law to perform military service. This applies to any individual whom the Serbian or the Montenegrin authorities consider to be Serbian or Montenegrin , regardless of whether or not the individual considers himself Serbian or Montenegrin, has a foreign citizenship and passport, or was born or lives outside of Serbia or Montenegro. If remaining in Serbia or in Montenegro for more than the 90-day period permitted for tourism or business, men of Serbian as well as Montenegrin descent may be prevented from leaving Serbia or Montenegro until they complete their military obligations or receive a waiver. Generally, obligatory non-voluntary military service in Serbia or in Montenegro will not affect US citizenship. Specific questions on this subject should be addressed to the citizenship section of the US Embassy in Belgrade. For additional general information, see the Citizenship and Nationality section of the Consular Affairs home page at http://travel.state.gov.
