Federal Benefits

Belgrade does not take claims for Social Security (SSA). The regional office that takes claims for all the former states of Yugoslavia (Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, and Slovenia) is the U.S. Embassy in Zagreb. The U.S. Embassy in Zagreb is responsible for the final development of SSA claims and processing SSA requests for services.

Please contact the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade if you have a question or require a service regarding any of the issues listed below. When necessary, the Embassy in Belgrade will send your case on to Zagreb for processing.

  • Applications for Social Security Numbers,
  • General Inquiries regarding:
    • Social Security,
    • Veterans' Administration Benefits,
    • U.S. Government Civil Service Pensions,
    • Railroad Retirement Benefits,
  • Specific inquires about any of the benefits listed above, including:
    • changes of address,
    • death of a recipient (including death certificates and any returned checks),
    • non-receipt of checks
