U.S. Embassy Belgrade Welcomes Progress in the Kovacevic Case

The U.S. Embassy in Belgrade welcomes the announcement today by Broome County District Attorney Gerald Mollen that he will transfer evidence to Serbia to be used in the prosecution of Miladin Kovacevic on charges of assaulting American citizen Bryan Steinhauer on May 4, 2008, in Binghamton, New York. The United States remains firmly committed to ensuring that Mr. Kovacevic, who fled New York in June 2008, faces justice in this case. The U.S. Embassy will help Mr. Mollen and the U.S. Department of Justice transfer the evidence to the Serbian authorities promptly, so that they can conduct a vigorous prosecution of Mr. Kovacevic.

We also welcome the willingness of the Government of Serbia to pay compensation to the Steinhauer family to help them cope with the consequences of the brutal attack on Bryan Steinhauer. The Serbian government’s readiness to take responsibility for its officials’ actions, which impaired avenues for prosecuting Mr. Kovacevic in the United States, is a very positive step.

Ambasada SAD u Beogradu pozdravlja napredak u vezi sa slučajem Kovačević

Ambasada SAD u Beogradu pozdravlja današnju najavu Okružnog tužioca Oblasti Brum Gerald Molena da će prebaciti dokaze u Srbiju kako bi bili iskorišteni u sudskom procesu protiv Miladina Kovačevića na osnovu tužbe za napad na američkog državljanina Brajana Štajnhauera 4. maja 2008, u Binghamtonu, država Njujork. SAD nastavljaju da čvrsto insistiraju da gospodin Kovačević, koji je u junu 2008. pobegao iz Njujorka, bude priveden pravdi. Ambasada SAD će pomoći gospodinu Molenu i Ministarstvu pravde SAD da u najkraćem roku prebace dokaze vlastima u Srbiji, kako bi one mogu da sprovedu energičan sudski postupak protiv gospodina Kovačevića.

Takođe pozdravljamo spremnost Vlade Srbije da porodici Štajnhauer plati odštetu kako bi im pomogla da se izbore sa posledicama brutalnog napada na Brajana Štajnhauera. Odlučnost srpske vlade da preuzme odgovornost za dela svog zvaničnika, zbog kojih je suđenje Kovačeviću u SAD bilo onemogućeno, je veoma pozitivan korak.
